Orientation workshop with BSWS Media Fellows
Bandhu Social Welfare Society (BSWS) works toward the well-being of sexual minorities by facilitating sexual and reproductive health services and supporting human rights, dignity and alternative livelihoods of their choices.
As a part of activities, BSWS has been offering Media Fellowship since 2011 for the journalists who are keen to work with the ‘third gender’ community and other sexual minorities who lives a underprivileged shallow life.
This media fellowship initiative is under Multi-Country South Asia (MSA) Regional HIV/AIDS Program (Phase-II) of The Global Fund which aims to reduce the impact of HIV on MSM and transgender populations in Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Nepal, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Maldives and Sri Lanka. UNDP serves as the Principal Recipient of MSA grant and BSWS has been implementing the activities as Sub-recipient since 2013.
This year on the 2nd and 3rd October at Savar Hope Center, BSWS organized a two day long workshop for the selected fellow members where representatives from various leading news agencies were present.
The main focus of the orientation workshop was to aware the selected media fellows about the life style, social position, physical, emotional and sexual aspects of life of the third genders and other sexual minorities. Also, the facilitators discussed about human rights and how they can protect themselves from HIV/AIDS and other diseases so they can live a better life. In this regard what BSWS and the government agencies has done so far was briefly discussed as well.
Mr. Keramot Ullah Biplob, special correspondent and Shahnaz Munni, News Editor from ATN Bangla, who are also the fellows of previous years, shared their experience on working with sexual minorities. Mr. Zahid Hossain, News Editor from Independent Television was present at the event as one of the resource persons.
On behalf of Banadhu, program director Mr. Md. Fosiul Ahsan, program manager Ms. Umme Farhana Zarif Kanta and legal consultant of Ain Alap, Mr. Zahid Hossain were present at the event.
