The COVID-19 outbreak has been quickly escalating around the world in the past weeks and things are rapidly changing and governments around the world have been placing various measures to curb the hike in infection. While the outbreak disproportionally affects various groups, those who are already facing discrimination on a daily basis because of their gender identity and expression, have been shown to be more marginalized by the countermeasures taken in this global health emergency.

In Bangladesh, the Transgender and Hijra community is always stigmatized and current lockdown situation has interrupted their day-to-day earning thus putting their life into misery. Considering this situation, Bandhu – a community-led organization has already taken various steps and trying to mobilizing funds from different sources to provide food, emergency medicine and hygiene support during COVID 19. An initiative has taken to provide to food and other emergency support to 3,325 community members and alongside continuing advocacy to link district and divisional level community members with local Social Welfare, DC offices and City Corporations to enable government support.

In Phase 1, Bandhu has already distributed food and hygiene support to 524 individuals in April 2020 and is processing to provide to another 1,100 community members under Phase II. Bandhu is now seeking financial contributions to support the remaining 1,700 community members.

‘বাড়িয়ে দাও হাত’- হিজড়া ও ট্রান্সজেন্ডার জনগোষ্ঠীর পাশে দাঁড়াই

কোভিড-১৯’র মহামারি বৈশ্বিক পরিস্থিতি পুরোপুরি বদলে দিচ্ছে। এর বিস্তার রোধে নিজের অবস্থান থেকে বিভিন্ন পদক্ষেপ নিচ্ছে দেশের সরকার। এই সংক্রমণ ভিন্ন জনগোষ্ঠীর মধ্যে ভিন্নভাবে প্রভাব ফেলে। যে জনগোষ্ঠী নিত্য বৈষম্য ও বঞ্চনার স্বীকার, জরুরী অবস্থায় তারা আরো বেশী সঙ্কটাপন্ন এবং প্রান্তিক হয়ে যাচ্ছে।
বাংলাদেশের হিজড়া ও ট্রান্সজেন্ডার জনগোষ্ঠী সবসময়ই বঞ্চনার স্বীকার এবং লকডাউনে তাদের নিত্য আয়ের সব উৎস বন্ধ হয়ে যাওয়ায় আরো বেশী অসহায় অবস্থা তৈরি হয়েছে। পরিস্থিতি বিবেচনায়, কমিউনিটি ভিত্তিক সংগঠন হিসেবে ‘বন্ধু’ নানা উদ্যোগ নিয়েছে তাদের সহযোগিতার জন্য, তার মধ্যে খাদ্য-পানীয় সহয়তায় তহবিল সংগ্রহ, জরুরী চিকিৎসা ও স্বাস্থ্যসেবা উল্লেখযোগ্য। ৩৩২৫ হিজড়া ও ট্রান্সজেন্ডার জনগোষ্ঠীর সদস্যকে সরাসরি খাদ্য-পানীয় সহয়তার পাশাপাশি, অন্যরা যেনো সরকারি সহায়তা পায় সে জন্য স্থানীয় প্রশাসন, সিটি করপোরেশন এবং সংশ্লীষ্টদের সঙ্গে নিবিড়ভাবে কাজ করে যাচ্ছে বন্ধু।
ইতিমধ্যে ৫২৪ হিজড়া ও ট্রান্সজেন্ডারকে খাদ্য-পানীয় এবং স্বাস্থ্যসেবামূলক সহায়তা নিশ্চিত করেছে বন্ধু সোশ্যাল ওয়েলফেয়ার সোসাইটি, আরো ১১০০ জনকে সহায়তার প্রস্তুতি সম্পন্ন করেছে। বাকী ১৭০০ জনের জন্য তহবিল সংগ্রহ প্রক্রিয়াধীন আছে।
