Who we are?
Bandhu Social Welfare Society (Bandhu) was formed in 1996 to address concerns of human rights abuse and denial of sexual health rights, and provide a rights based approach to health and social services for the most stigmatized and vulnerable population in Bangladesh, MSM in particular kothis/hijras and their partners. BSWS have been officially registered since 1997 started with a staff of two and a small program in Central Dhaka was supported by Royal Norwegian Embassy.
A core objective of Bandhu work with MSM and Hijras/TG is to advocate and provide for an environment where the respect and dignity of all MSM, Hijras/TG, irrespective of their specific gender and/or sexual identity, or the lack thereof, is assured, along with the creation of a supportive social, policy and legal environment to enable MSM to more effectively respond to sexual health rights and basic human rights in our country, along with increasing their health seeking behaviors. Over the years Bandhu has emerged as a national community led organization and currently providing social and health services to a broad range of “Sexual Minority” Populations in 23 districts in Bangladesh.
Introducing Training Unit (TU)
The TU – a major component of Bandhu started working as an independent unit from the very beginning of this organization. One of the missions of the TU since its inception was to build organizational capacity in the field of reproductive and sexual health and rights. It does so by organizing in-house and need-based trainings for its staff. Apart from this BSWS also helps small and medium-sized NGOs and local CBO’s development organizations build specific skills by providing cost-effective relevant services and training, drawing upon the organization’s collective experience. The TU usually organizes National and International training sessions. The TU is run by a team of dedicated and experienced professionals. The uniqueness of the Training Unit is that the course contents and sessions are based on individual course modules originally developed by the BSWS/TU professionals based on their experience and organizational needs.
